The Maori people were great mariners and fishermen so the Matau is therefore one of the most powerful symbols used in Maori culture as it represents prosperity, abundance and fertility.
The Hammerhead shark with its strange shape and ability to disappear into the depths was seen as a protector and messenger for the ocean.
It also is said to provide good luck and safety when traveling over water. The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life.
Note:
This is an original design created by The Bone Art Place founding artist Don Campbell.
Unfortunately some unscrupulous traders are now copying this design and claiming it as their own or having it made in China.
Don't be fooled, there is no comparison in the quality and no greater passion for a creation than from the real artist.
Carved from treated and polished domestic cow bone.
Species = Bovine
